As disorienting as it is to observe the leader attempt to overturn the traditional concept about democracy and replace it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion within America who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. That is those of us – among senior generations close to half – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have watched over the years as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we grew up with into the complete reverse of our perception of his character. Fundamentally, they turned a figure of affection into an icon of hate who blesses exactly the harshness that he criticized in the Gospel; this change developed more slowly, across decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disturbing in the same ways, a bewildering emotional blow for countless people.
A Damaging Christianity Gains Ground

The infant develops in modest conditions, a working carpenter; his message focuses on affection for fellow humans, especially for the poor – not simply tender feelings, but practical compassion, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. Jesus' answer to hostility is to turn the additional cheek – not as an act of compliant endurance, but as a way to teach the assailant; his crime policy is that if an individual takes your outer garment you must offer him your sweater also.
The obvious and clear truth that the Jesus in biblical accounts requests a kind of radical love centered on the needy is what has always made the Christian faith something of a scandalous religion: appealing to the masses, but due to its inherent radicalness needing to be contained. In the fifties it was contained via weakening – Protestantism was so dominant that it basically baptized the status quo.
A Conflict for the Highest Within Us
Hence I have become heartened to observe the persistent defiance regarding Trump emerge in this past year. It has provided significant comfort to participate in developing the initiative that has demonstrated publicly via continuous gatherings, and seems to have inspired voters to participate in significant amounts in the off-year elections. We must have to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, displaying national flags throughout each rally and requests to the highest qualities in US history.
