Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with video review technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the right to contest particular decisions from the official, following the system currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development follows just a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the umpire to review specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can initiate.

Case in Point

A recent example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for Grand Slams. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure if a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
